Ten minutes later, Davey found himself weaving along a collection of dim corridors on their way to the surface. Mia strode confidently in front of him with Jameson in the lead before her. That silky blonde hair of hers bounced against her shoulders as she clutched her helmet in one hand at her hip.

Thankfully she’d changed into a loose fitting uniform, and yet somehow he still had to talk himself out of staring at her ass.

Frowning, Davey shifted the rifle in his hands, taking comfort in the heavy feel of it. He could do this job and be done with this job and these feelings would go away.

As they moved through the passageways and beeped through heavy doors, Davey could sense the surface approaching. A humidity took over the air. It was almost like you could inhale summer. Perspiration began to bead down his spine and for once, he welcomed it.

Fresh air. Sunshine. Freedom. They were only a short walk away.

When they finally shoved out into the parking garage, the noise that greeted them felt almost deafening. Sure, they’d only been isolated together for less than three days, but it had been a quiet three days.

The sound of fifty soldiers milling around was like the rumble of thunder. It was an assault on your senses. The energy built in your bones, pushing adrenaline out into your fingertips.

This was home, Davey thought suddenly. Soldiers. Work. Purpose. Violence. This was his comfort zone.

Throwing Davey a quick look over his shoulder, Jameson’s eyes sparked and a smile ticked at the corner of his mouth. Excitement. Jameson knew. He understood what this noise was, and he felt the exact same way about it that Davey did.

For maybe the first time ever, Davey saw his new boss as a soldier too. He saw him as a guy just like him, making choices because he’s had to do so in order to survive.

Forgiveness was too strong a word for what Davey was feeling, but there was a loosening. That knot of hatred, that knot of anger that he’d carried with him for so long, relaxed inside of him in that moment.

“Alright.” Jameson gestured to a Humvee. “We’re going to be riding together. Malik, Evans, Malpas, and Locklan will be joining. We have to meet this guy DeKalb down in the fields where Mia’s going to work.”

“How long will your crew be accompanying us?” Davey asked.

His eyes swept the space, taking in the number of guys milling around, the vehicles present, the mood, the everything. In front of him, Mia shifted her helmet under her arm and tucked a stray hair behind one ear.

“Put your cover on,” he instructed, and reached up to tap her shoulder.

With a growl, Mia brushed his hand away and slammed the helmet on her head. Ahead of her, Jameson suppressed a grin before returning his focus forward.

“As long as it takes,” he supplied, continuing to walk towards the collection of vehicles. “Weeks or maybe longer, if you feel it’s necessary.”

Bobbing his head, Davey exhaled.
